'Supply uncertainty in the manufacturing industry' report published

Published on 31 July 2025

In May 2024, the Netherlands Materials Observatory (NMO), in cooperation with FME (the employers organization for the technology industry), conducted a survey among FME members. In it, companies were asked about their experiences with supply disruptions and the activities undertaken to mitigate any consequences. Subsequently, several companies participating in the survey were interviewed to gain a deeper insight into their experiences. The results of this survey can be read in the NMO report: ‘Supply uncertainty in the manufacturing industry - Insights based on a survey of and interviews with FME members’.

Strategic stockpiling

This survey shows that many companies are aware of risks in their supply chains. Recent years, with the corona crisis, the Russian invasion of Ukraine and trade conflicts, gave every reason to do so. Apart from supply risks transparency along the value chain requires attention.

The actions taken by companies can be instructive for governments, knowledge and umbrella organisations. For instance, design, circularity but especially stockpiling are often mentioned as responses to reduce risks in the supply chain.
